Episode 74: Swype is looking really, really good

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

At MobileFocus this evening, we popped by the Swype stand and had a look. We first saw the Swype founder Cliff Kushler demonstrate a really alpha version of the text input system back at CTIA in 2008 (See the end of this video). Fast forward a year and a half and it’s not integrated into an array of handset platforms. We caught a demonstration of the system working on a Samsung i8910 running Symbian but it’s working on Windows Mobile and Android too.

It’s all very well seeing the demo — could Rafe actually use the system immediately without any training? We found out… Have a watch of the video below…

Episode 14: Ed Lea, Europe’s #1 independent iPhone Developer

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

It was an absolute pleasure to sit down for an hour with iPhone developer extraordinaire, Ed Lea. I dropped him an email on the off chance that he’d be available to pop by One Alfred Place for a bit of filming. He’s usually knee deep in code and, as one of Europe’s leading (and most successful) independent iPhone developers, he’s in huge, huge, huge demand.

This is what Mobile Developer TV is all about. Sitting down with uber-smart people and capturing them talking, informally, directly, honestly, about their experiences.

We filmed for about an hour and more or less all of it is gold dust.

If you’re involved in iPhone development — or indeed, any mobile development, seriously take a few minutes aside to sit and watch Ed talk about his experiences.

In this episode, we get introduced to Ed, a bit of background — then we find out about his initial experiences with his first few applications.

Shout out to our sponsor, Origin Mobile

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Thank you to our sponsor, Origin Mobile, for having the foresight to support Mobile Developer TV! Here’s an overview of their services:

Origin Mobile offers companies a managed service to design, create, build and test applications across mulitple handsets and multiple platforms.

It’s great that the iPhone has opened up the way for companies to get onto arguably the latest major piece of real estate in the world – the mobile desktop, but the iPhone represents just 17 million handsets. Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and the others represent the other 2.9 billion handsets already on the planet and the majority of those to come.

Applications are going mass market and Origin Mobile can develop your brand and product into a mobile application to take advantage of this new market.

If you’re looking for help with mobile application development, I’d like you to take some time to get to know Origin Mobile and consider them for your next project. Origin’s support is invaluable in helping keep Mobile Developer TV online and operating. If you’d like a warm introduction to Ed and his team, just send me an email — ewan@mobiledeveloper.tv.

We’re looking for some video sponsors — if you’d like to reach hundreds of thousands (and, soon, millions) of mobile developers and mobile application fanatics, the details are here.

Episode 13: A walkabout and demo at Funambol

Friday, June 12th, 2009

I’ve been watching Fumambol, the open source ‘MobileWe for Billions of mobile phones’, for quite a while. I’m always one of the first to try out their new services — Indeed I think I was one of the first to download their Android Sync app. So I was delighted to get the invitation to pop by Funambol’s offices to bring you a tour of their Silicon Valley HQ and a demo of their all new and simply gorgeous open source MobileWe portal.

What a lot of people might now know is that you can integrate Funambol’s open source sync solutions into your products and services very easily. So for example, if you’ve developed an application to track a series of relevant dates (e.g. TV Show times), you can have your app sync with your user’s calendar automatically. You don’t need to worry about supporting a few billion handsets — Funambol have got that covered.

Take a bit of time and have a watch! You can find the Funambol Developer’s Forge packed with info here.

Episode 12: Tim Haysom on the Open Mobile Terminal Platform

Friday, June 12th, 2009

OMTP (“the Open Mobile Terminal Platform”) and their BONDI initiative, is attracting a lot of attention from the developer community. Finally — after a lot of hard work and OEM wrangling, OMTP have got version 1 of BONDI approved by an array of handset manufacturers and operators. This is quite a coup — it means that soon, you’ll be able to use the BONDI framework to develop on one platform — the output of which will be compatible with all handsets that support the standard. So much so that we should start to see BONDI-compliant devices hit the market next year.

Tim Haysom, their Marketing Director, tells us more in this episode.
