iPhone Boot Camp hiring instructors (particularly for SFO)

Monday, July 20th, 2009

If you’re interested in learning how to develop for the Apple iPhone platform, then take a look at the iPhone Boot Camp. They hold crash-courses in iPhone platform programming all across the planet (upcoming events are being held in LA, Chicago, Boston, Sofia, London…).

The chaps who run iPhone Boot Camp are on the hunt for more superstar instructors or ‘developer-trainers’ are they refer to them. If that’s you — and you fancy helping budding iPhone developers get to grips with the platform, then you should drop them a line here.

The whole concept with the boot camp is to get you quickly up to speed within 3 days. Theoretically, if you’ve been paying attention, you should be able to knock up a reasonably sexy iPhone app by the end of it. Here’s a look at one of the sample syllabuses:

iPhone Applications Development with the SDK 3.0
The three day intensive workshop from 10am-6pm covers the fundamentals and advanced feature of iPhone development, enough material that you should be able to develop your own iPhone application and upload it to the AppStore. The workshop is limited in size and features hands on exercises under the supervision of the instructor and teaching assistant.

Symbian giving FREE Nokia 5800 to iPhone developers TODAY

Monday, June 8th, 2009

If you’re an iPhone Developer and you’ve always wanted to try developing on Symbian, BUT you don’t have an $800 handset to test on… help is at hand…

The first 100 developers to attend today’s Symbian Hackathon at Jillians Bar (across from the Moscone Center) in San Francisco today get a free Nokia 5800.

A gorgeous handset.

That’s right. Symbian have done a Google. They’re giving away handsets to developers — but they’re doing so in a very smart manner. They’ve organised a hackathon today, after the Apple keynote speech. But the biggest issue with a hackathon, for your average iPhone developer? No handset to test on.

Until today, that is. Now’s your chance.

Here are the details I got from the invitation, open to all iPhone developers (and, I imagine, anyone else interested in checking-out Symbian):

Schedule:
1-4 pm Hack-A-Thon: burgers, $$, free phones
5-7 pm Happy Hour: drinks, munchies, pool, wii

Join us at Jillian’s
101 4th St # 170
San Francisco, CA 94103
(415) 369-6100

If you’re in the area and you’re interested in learning more about developing on Symbian, I strongly recommend you go along, meet the chaps (say you’re looking for Maurice, their Community Manager — and say I sent you, if you’re looking for a friendly face) and get yourself a free device to play with.

Please do pass this along to any colleagues you reckon might be interested.

Mobile Developer TV at MoMo Silicon Valley

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

I was filming at Mobile Monday Silicon Valley last night. I came straight off the British Airways flight from London and hopped in a taxi to Palo Alto before digging out the camera equipment and hot footing it round-the-corner to the event.

I was there in my capacity as producer of Mobile Developer TV. I met a ton of interesting people and managed to persuade most of them to go on camera so I’ll be bringing you that special edition episode shortly.

There must have been 300+ people in attendance and, although the venue provided plenty of seats, it was standing room only, especially during the presentations.

The format that organisers Kate and Mike have been using recently is roughly 6 x 5 minute presentations. So you get a quick-fire look into the minds of 6 developers within 30 minutes. Hugely compelling and very, very interesting. The format keeps everyone interested and the 5-minute limit (observed by most) ensures that the presenters deliver the salient points swiftly.

If you’d like to have a poke about the presenter line-up, here are the links:

You can, incidentally, check-out a preview of Zhiing in Mobile Developer TV’s episode one published last week.

Note to self: Definitely go to Google I/O next year

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Quincy over at 9to5mac.com reports (via TC) that everyone who went along to the Google I/O show at the Moscone Center in San Francisco today is walking away with a free HTC Magic Android handset (running cupcake, no less) and a month’s unlimited 3G data.

Very nice indeed.

I’ll take two please…

You can find the Google I/O site here.

We’re off to Sony Ericsson’s official launch tomorrow

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

So tomorrow night, Sony Ericsson are hosting a launch party tomorrow night in London.

It’s not just a launch party, it’s a Global launch party.

Here’s what the invite says:

Join us for an evening of cocktails, canapés and innovative Sony Ericsson product announcements for 2009

“So is this to talk about Sony Ericsson’s Android offering announced in Taiwan the other week?” I asked the very competent PR from Burston Marsteller. (“22nd May: Android cometh: Sony Ericsson confirms Android 2.0 handsets“)

I could hear her smiling on the phone.

“It’s to present Sony Ericsson’s innovative product announcements for 2009,” she said, before adding, “I’m sorry, I just can’t say.”

Here’s hoping it’s Android, Android and thrice Android. In fact, after the Taiwan semi announcement, I’d be rather surprised if it wasn’t Android.

I’m well up for some Sony Ericsson Android goodness.

Further, I’m very interested to discover what kind of mobile developer support they’ll be offering.

I should have some rather good video for you — I’m aiming to talk to the CEO and their chief designers on camera.

Mobile Monday Silicon Valley rocked

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

Mobile Monday Silicon Valley was fantastic this evening. There was a huge turnout on an uncharacteristically rainy San Francisco evening for the Location-Aware app demo evening.

Skyhook Wireless kindly underwrote the bar and gave a pitch at the beginning of the series of presentations, outlining their rather excellent range of location services available to mobile developers. I managed to catch Skyhook’s Director of Marketing, Kate Imbach, on camera discussing the merits of their offering. Suffice to say if you’re a developer and you’d like to integrate location based services (e.g. Find Me) into your app, definitely, definitely talk to Skyhook.

Here are the companies who presented:

  • Crazymenu.com – Launched their iPhone (lunchtime) online restaurant discovery and ordering facility. I really liked their concept. I’m going to look for it in the iPhone app store.
  • Cristdrive – Their application, Voilà, will simply and elegantly tell any of your online services where you are, right now. $0.99 in the app store.
  • Retronyms – Couldn’t make it for some reason so Kate from Skyhook did her best with their presentation. They’ve got a rather interesting GPS game by the name of Seek ‘n Spell going live. Check their site.
  • Wertago – Showed off their app offering city nightlife in the palm of your hand. Nice!
  • Geoterrestrial – GPSToday, a comprehensive Windows Mobile application offering an array of GPS related services. If you’re into location services, definitely check out what they’ve created — amongst other features, it’ll sit in the background and continually tell folk where you are.
  • HearPlanet – Dale Larson’s audio city guides deliver location information that really speaks to you. You can, as the site puts it, ‘leave those bulky tour books behind and let HearPlanet (iPhone) show you the way. Get it on the App Store. It’s the #2 rated Travel app at the moment and they’ve had almost 500k downloads so far.
  • Life360 – Trades on fear. But in a good way. Their mobile (and desktop) services deliver you instant safety, security and peace of mind. I’m going to get this for my wife and I. Google Latitude helps show where we both are.. but I want more than that. I particularly like their ‘find your family in an emergency’ facilities.
  • Carrrmatey by Lionebra –> Brought the house down. So much so that I filmed their pitch. I think the audience were really taken with the pirate theme. It’s a really smart utility that records where you left your car, reminds you to return at appointed times (for meters) and guides you back to your car — rather useful if you keep on forgetting where you parked.

I managed to get some good video interviews tonight — I was going to hold them back until we’ve launched with the nice new look and feel, but it’s al about content, right? I’m going to aim to get the first lot of videos up tomorrow morning.

Heading to MobileTron on Thursday

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Mobile Tron is Matthew Bennett’s inaugural mobile event for San Francisco and it’s taking place this Thursday at a rather swish design gallery art space (“Receiver Design”). The Facebook event is here and you’re welcome to come along if you’re into mobile and you’ve got something to say.

I’m taking the camera equipment along so if you’d like to get on camera for Mobile Developer TV (the launch is coming shortly), come along.
